Plain Pattern Language
Have you ever read Design Patterns by the Gang of Four? I sure haven't! Instead, I have read A Pattern Language: a 1,200-page book on architecture that inspired the GoF. I originally picked it up hoping to build houses in The Sims… In this talk, I'd like to share what I took away from it as both a software developer and a linguist. It's a book review that also invites us to reflect on why we write code in the first place.

Computational Linguistics 101
This talk provides a broad introduction to both linguistics and computational linguistics. It explores five subtopics representing key aspects of human language ability and presents their computational counterparts to illustrate the capabilities an AI would need to emulate in order to pass the Turing test. It is of course outdated: LLMs did not exist yet.
